Mayor Justin M. Bibb Encourages Applications to Join New Community Police Commission
Friday, April 29, 2022 - Cleveland, OH – The Office of Mayor Justin M. Bibb today announced it will extend the application deadline for the new Community Police Commission until Monday, May 9, 2022 at 11:59 p.m.
“We understand that this is a serious commitment and decided to extend the deadline to give residents more time to consider serving on the new Community Police Commission,” said Mayor Bibb. “The new Commission will have real authority and set a new tone in our police department. It’s critical we get this right,” Mayor Bibb added.
Following the passage of Issue 24 in November 2021, the new Commission’s oversight abilities are significantly strengthened. Members will be empowered by the City Charter to investigate misconduct and make decisions about police training, recruitment and discipline.
Over the next week, applicants are encouraged to review Charter Section 115-5, which outlines the powers, duties, and responsibilities of the new Commission, and submit an application at https://mayor.clevelandohio.gov/police-reform by Monday, May 9, 2022.
The Office of the Mayor is committed to a fair and rigorous recruitment process to select and appoint members of the new Commission, in accordance with Charter requirements and with City Council approval.
