New Arts Exhibition Set to Debut at City Hall on February 6
Saturday, February 1, 2025 — Cleveland — The City of Cleveland and Cleveland City Council proudly announces its third annual Black History Month exhibition, celebrating the national theme “African Americans and Labor.” This year’s exhibit, titled Artists Run the Streets™ BHMX Edition: Black History Month Excellence, highlights the profound impact of labor through the lens of six talented Cleveland artists.
Curated by the For Art’s Sake artist collective – led by branding, design, and marketing visionary Kumar Arora, a Transformative Arts Fund Awardee – the exhibition brings together works that align with the national theme. Featuring the thought-provoking artistry of Christa Freehands, Chris Goody, Ryan Harris, Mike Miller, Sampson Smiley, and Lacy Talley, the exhibition honors the resilience of Cleveland’s Black community while inspiring fresh perspectives on art, economy, and community.
"This exhibition not only honors the labor and legacy of Cleveland’s Black community but also sets a powerful precedent for how artists can participate in defining the city’s creative economy,” said Mayor Justin Bibb. “Artists Run the Streets™ BHMX Edition is more than an exhibit – it’s a movement.”
This curated installation combines visual narratives and interactive elements to spark dialogue, reflection, and connection. Attendees will explore how each artist interprets labor and legacy, diving into themes of perseverance, identity, and pride.
“As a champion for the arts and real believer that the arts inspire every aspect of the human experience, I am eager for the installation of the BHMX Arts series at City Hall,” stated Ward 9 Councilman Kevin Conwell, who also serves as Chair for the Health, Human Services & the Arts Committee. “We have many talented artists here in Cleveland, and it will be a treat to showcase their talents to City Hall workers, visitors, and beyond!”
For Art’s Sake is one of seven Transformative Arts Fund projects announced in July 2024. This innovative 13-month program empowers Cleveland artists to thrive in the creative economy through public activations across the city. By bridging gaps in artistic development, the projects provide participants with opportunities and equips them with critical skills in branding, entrepreneurship, and community engagement. For Art’s Sake amplifies local talent while fostering a deeper connection between art and public life. Experience the power of labor and legacy through the eyes of the For Art’s Sake artist collective, as they lead the charge in shaping a thriving creative economy.
"Through innovative storytelling and a fresh perspective, this exhibition shines a light on the brilliance of Cleveland’s artists, showcasing how their creative contributions are shaping the city’s legacy and future of the creative workforce," added Rhonda Brown – Senior Strategist Arts, Culture & Creative Economy for the City of Cleveland.
