Wednesday, June 26, 2024 — Cleveland — The Ohio Legislature’s investment of $20 million into the North Coast Connector will support the construction of a land bridge connecting downtown with the lakefront – an investment that Cleveland Mayor Justin M. Bibb said highlights the significance of the redevelopment project for the city, region, and state.
“The North Coast Connector is a game-changer for Cleveland and will have a lasting impact on our city’s economic growth and development,” Mayor Bibb said. “This land bridge will not only enhance connectivity between downtown and the lakefront but also create new opportunities for businesses, residents, and visitors alike. We are incredibly grateful for the support and dedication of our state partners who championed this project, as well as the residents, business and civic leaders who advocated tirelessly for its realization.”
Funding for the project – through the One-Time Strategic Community Investment Fund – was included as part of an overall spending package, House Bill 2, passed today by the Ohio General Assembly. The legislation now heads to Governor Mike DeWine’s desk for his signature.
The North Coast Connector creates a direct connection between the Cleveland Convention Center and future hotel and entertainment development on the lakefront, opens up over 20 acres of underutilized surface parking for future economic development that will benefit Clevelanders, provides Great Lakes cruise tourists with immediate access to downtown, and helps the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Great Lakes Science Center to continue to attract more visitors.
The North Coast Connector is expected to catalyze economic growth, attract new investments, and further solidify Cleveland’s position as a vibrant and thriving city. The North Coast Connector will serve as a vital link between key areas of the city, fostering increased pedestrian traffic, tourism, and community engagement.
The City of Cleveland looks forward to continuing to work collaboratively with stakeholders at the local, state, and federal levels to bring this transformative project to fruition. Together, we will continue to build a brighter future for our city and region.
