Cleveland Architect Database
The Cleveland Architects Database is a listing of architects and master builders that have worked in Cleveland, since the 1820s and the buildings they designed here and abroad up to and including the 1970s. Sources include City of Cleveland Building Permits, professional publications including American Architect and Builder News, Inland Architect, Interstate Architect, the Ohio Architect and Builder, the Annals of Cleveland, the Plain Dealer, the Leader, the Press, Material Facts, the Bystander, and Cleveland Town Topics. Additional source material reviewed at the Cleveland Public Library Fine Arts Department, various books on Cleveland architecture, the American Institute of Architects Guide to Cleveland Architecture and a catalogue of architectural drawings maintained by the Western Reserve Historical Society were consulted. The Cleveland Necrology file maintained by the Cleveland Public Library, the United States Census, and Cleveland City Directories were reviewed in compiling accompanying biographies.
For this database, an architect is defined as anyone that identified himself or herself as an architect. Generally, these people had an office in the city or designed multiple structures here or in the immediate surrounding cities. This project began as a hobby by Robert Keiser over several years. Craig Bobby has researched many of the entries and donated photographs of those buildings. This is an ongoing project and will be updated on a regular basis. PLEASE NOTE: All entries have not been fully researched and require citations. Please confirm any unsourced entry

Matzinger, Paul (architect)
Biography
Paul Matzinger was born in Canton, Ohio and raised in Chicago. He graduated from Calvin College in 1888. He was employed as a draftsman by A. W. Rust, the Savings and Sensible Architectural Bureau, Cramer & Fugman, and Arthur Oviatt. From 1893 to 1897 he was a member of the firm of Matzinger and Sprackling. After 1898 he was in business for himself, except for two brief partnerships, Matzinger and Hulett (1905) and Matzinger and Miller (1911-1915). He was the architect of numerous churches, apartment buildings, and terraces throughout Cleveland. Significant examples of his work include the Tudor Revival Clifton Terrace (1905-6), the Gothic Revival Zion Lutheran Church (1902), and the Mission style Eighth Reformed Church (1909). In 1920 his office was located in the Caxton Building and he lived at 11609 Fairport Avenue in Cleveland's Glenville neighborhood. In the later 1920's he worked for Lehman and Schmitt until 1928 when he went into practice for himself. He would form a partnership with Rudolph J. Grosel. He later moved to 6870 Ridge Road in Parma. He died in Boynton Beach, Florida in November 1966 at the age of ninety-six, and was buried in Lake View Cemetery in Cleveland.

McCornack, Walter (architect)
Biography
Walter McCornack was born in Oneida, Illinois. He attended Knox College and graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1903. He worked in the office of Edmund M. Wheelwright in Boston from 1909 to 1913. He succeeded Frank S. Barnum as the architect for the Cleveland Board of Education from 1914 to 1925, an era of substantial growth for the Cleveland Public Schools. In early 1925 he joined Franz C. Warner as a firm (Warner & McCornack) until George Evans Mitchell was added as a partner in March 1928 (Warner, McCornack & Mitchell). He left the firm later that year. During the Hoover administration he was appointed Chair of the Chamber of Commerce committee on blighted districts and slum clearance. He was the architect of the Cedar - Central Homes in 1937 (becoming known as a pioneer in slum clearance), one of the first three public housing projects in the nation. He returned to Boston in 1939 to become dean of the School of Architecture and Regional and City Planning at MIT. He retired in 1945. He died in Littleton, New Hampshire.
