Cleveland Architect Database
The Cleveland Architects Database is a listing of architects and master builders that have worked in Cleveland, since the 1820s and the buildings they designed here and abroad up to and including the 1970s. Sources include City of Cleveland Building Permits, professional publications including American Architect and Builder News, Inland Architect, Interstate Architect, the Ohio Architect and Builder, the Annals of Cleveland, the Plain Dealer, the Leader, the Press, Material Facts, the Bystander, and Cleveland Town Topics. Additional source material reviewed at the Cleveland Public Library Fine Arts Department, various books on Cleveland architecture, the American Institute of Architects Guide to Cleveland Architecture and a catalogue of architectural drawings maintained by the Western Reserve Historical Society were consulted. The Cleveland Necrology file maintained by the Cleveland Public Library, the United States Census, and Cleveland City Directories were reviewed in compiling accompanying biographies.
For this database, an architect is defined as anyone that identified himself or herself as an architect. Generally, these people had an office in the city or designed multiple structures here or in the immediate surrounding cities. This project began as a hobby by Robert Keiser over several years. Craig Bobby has researched many of the entries and donated photographs of those buildings. This is an ongoing project and will be updated on a regular basis. PLEASE NOTE: All entries have not been fully researched and require citations. Please confirm any unsourced entry

Hardway, George (architect)
Biography
George J. Hardway was active in Cleveland from 1887 until 1905. He was a partner of Ora Williams from 1889 to 1891. The largest share of his work was on residences, although he would occasionally design industrial or commercial buildings. He had also designed houses in Seattle, Washington and Odebolt, Iowa. From the buildings that we know he designed, his homes were often simpler in design. He avoided the Queen Anne style that was prevalent at the time. In 1892 he and Charles Tousley were the editors and publishers of the American Builder. He left Cleveland in 1905 for New York City, where he had an office at 347 Fifth Avenue and lived in Great Neck on Long Island. He died at Great Neck in 1929 at the age of seventy-one.

Heard, Charles (architect)
Biography
Charles W. Heard was born in Onondaga, New York. He settled in Painesville and learned the carpentry trade. He married Carolyn Goldsmith, daughter of Master Builder Jonathan Goldsmith in 1830. They moved to Cleveland in 1833, about the time the Ohio and Erie Canal opened and Cleveland experienced its first substantial population and economic growth. It soon passed Painesville in population and opportunity. The first city directory in Cleveland in 1837 lists Charles Heard as a carpenter and joiner. The 1845 directory listed him as a Master Builder. In 1846 and 1847 he was in partnership with carpenter Warham Warner. The 1850 City Directory shows him in the firm of Heard and Porter, architects and builders. That partnership lasted until 1864. He formed a partnership with his son-in-law Walter Blythe that lasted from 1866 to 1871. From 1871 to the end of his life in 1876 he was the principle in the firm of Heard and Sons, when his sons Lucas Allen and Charles W. Heard Jr. joined the firm. He was active in the community serving as a member of the Board of Education and the Board of Alderman. He lived at 32 Euclid Street. His wife Caroline died on January 9, 1851. They had eight children; the youngest, Lucas Allen, was five when she died. By 1870 the census showed that his real estate was valued at $80,000 and that his seven adult children and two servants were living with him on Euclid Avenue. He died in 1876 leaving the unmarried children use of his home for seven years.

The firm specialized in residential architecture for upper income clients. Howell & Thomas moved to Cleveland in 1918. Husband, John (architect)
Biography
John J. Husband was born in Virginia. He was listed as a builder and architect from 1844 until 1853 in Philadelphia City Directories. He appears in Cleveland City Directories as an architect from 1853 to 1861. Charles C. Miller worked as a draftsman in his Cleveland office. Miller later went to work as an architect in Toledo and Chicago and was the co-author of an architectural pattern book. In 1860 Husband was living alone in the Weddell House. From 1863 to 1890 he is listed as an architect and civil engineer in Baltimore. He had returned to work in Cleveland in 1865. According to newspaper accounts, after the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln, Husband was overheard in a conversation. A gentleman said that the assassination was perfectly horrible. Husband replied, "Some might think so; others might not. For my part I think it a damned small loss." Because of the remarks he was roughed up by a mob. His name was chipped away from the cornerstone of the Cuyahoga County Courthouse. He returned to live in Baltimore where he was still living in 1893. He is not listed in the 1894 city directory. (Thomas) Arthur & Husband dissolved in 1891.
